How to archive and restore an archived Microsoft Team

In this post we will run down on how to archive and restore a Microsoft Team.

You can archive a Team when it’s no longer needed or active, but it will be used in the future and needs to be reactivated. All items in the Team like conversations and files will be read-only. Once the content is marked as read-only you can still search through it.

Ps. Only a team owners can archive and restore teams.

To Archive a Team, we need to Login to Microsoft Teams,

then click on Teams and click on Manage Teams option.

From the Mange Team windows you will have a list of all available Teams in your tenant.

To archive a Team, click on the (…) next to the team you would like to archive.

In the below example, the “Christmas party 2018” team will be archived.

Once you have clicked on Archive team, you will get a prompt to ask if you want to “Make the SharePoint site -read-only for team members”. Tick the box and click “Archive”

Once the archive process is done, you will be able to view all the archived teams in the “Manage Teams” screen at the bottom.

To Restore an archived team, click on options (…) next to the archived team. Then select restore team.

Once the team has been restored it will be listed again under the Active teams section.

This is how you can quickly archive and restore an archive team, but one thing to keep in mind is that you have to be the owner of the team to be able to archive and restore it.
